How to turn PDF pages into PNG pictures
PNG is the right picture for a page of writing, a table, a chart or a drawing. It keeps every pixel exactly as it was drawn, so letters stay sharp at their edges instead of picking up the faint grey fuzz a JPG adds.
- Drop the PDF on the box at the top.
- Leave PNG chosen. Pick JPG instead only for scans and photographs, where it makes much smaller files.
- Choose how big the longest side of the picture should be. Larger is sharper and heavier.
- Press Make the pictures, and wait while the pages are drawn one by one.
- Save one page on its own, or Save all to get every page in a zip.
When PNG is the better choice
For a slide, a screenshot of a form, a diagram or a page you will put in a document or on a website, PNG looks better. The file is several times larger than a JPG, which on a page of text is a fair price for being clean.
For a scanned page or a page full of photographs, PNG only makes the file bigger without looking any better. That is what JPG is for, and the same tool does both.
What is lost on the way
A picture of a page has no text in it, so nothing can be searched, selected or copied afterwards, and links stop working. If you want the words, PDF to Markdown gives you the text instead, and OCR PDF can read the letters back out of a scan.
Good to know
- Is the background transparent?
- No. A PDF page has a white sheet under it, and that is drawn too, so the picture looks like the page.
- How sharp will the pictures be?
- As sharp as you ask. Each page is drawn from scratch at the size you choose, so a larger number gives real detail, not an enlargement.
- Is the document uploaded to be drawn?
- No. Your browser draws the pages itself, which is the same thing it does to show you a PDF in the first place.
