How to turn an ODT file into a PDF
ODT is the format LibreOffice Writer and OpenOffice save by default, and one Google Docs and Word can save too. It opens properly only where one of those programs is installed. A PDF opens the same on every phone and computer.
- Drop the .odt file on the box at the top.
- Check what was found: the paragraphs, tables and pictures.
- Press Make the PDF, and look at the first page.
- Press Save the PDF.
What is kept, and what is not
The writing is kept exactly, with its bold and italic. Headings stay headings, bulleted and numbered lists stay lists, tables stay tables, and PNG and JPG pictures are placed after the paragraph they were in.
The document is set again in one clean style, so the exact fonts, colours and spacing are not copied. Headers, footers, footnotes and comments are left out, and so are charts. The tool tells you when something was left out.
Good to know
- Can I convert a .doc or .docx here?
- A .docx, yes, with Word to PDF. The old .doc format cannot be read here; open it in LibreOffice and save it as .odt or .docx first.
- Why does it look different from LibreOffice?
- Because it is laid out again, not printed. Your words are all there; the typeface and exact spacing are the house style. For an exact copy, use Export as PDF in LibreOffice itself.
- Is the document uploaded?
- No. It is opened and laid out by your browser, on your computer.
